An unusual blending of elements comes together in this crime story drawn from Japanese history.  During the early Meiji period a number of “Dokufu” (Poison Women) committed a significant number of murders.  These crimes were most often committed by wives on their husbands in order to be together with their lovers.  At that time women were executed in the same manner as men, to wit: by being decapitated.  This is the story of the most notorious of all, Takahashi Oden who, in 1879, was the last woman executed by decapitation in Japan.  The blending in this film was done by utilizing characteristics of a popular manga about the executioner known as Head-Chopper Asaemon (a hereditary post, all of whom had the same name) and giving him a history with Oden which surfaces on the execution grounds when her hood is removed and they see each other.  This particular story has been used both in the “Samurai Executioner” manga as the second Volume: “Yoshitsugu-Yamada Asaemon the Third” and in history books, most notably Hillsborough’s “Samurai Sketches.”

“Umberto Lenzi’s “Seven Blood-Stained Orchids” is a surprisingly well-made and captivating giallo.A black-gloved killer is murdering beautiful women and one of them survives, but her assailant thinks that she is dead.So her hubby decides to look for the killer. The film is never boring and there are some tension-filled moments. The murders are pretty tame, but the power drill scene is quite gruesome. The women here are absolutely gorgeous and there is a nice amount of nudity. The opening with the black gloved figure driving at night is a terrific scene. So if you’re a fan of Italian giallos you can’t go wrong with “Seven Blood-Stained Orchids”” [imdb]

In Paprika Chips, Save European Home on June 28, 2013 at 4:25 pm

Title: Satanik
Production: Spain/Italy 1968
Director: Piero Vivarelli
Cast: Magda Konopka, Julio Peña, Umberto Raho
Run Time: 84min
Circulation: PAL DVDr
Generation/Source: TV Rip
Language: Italian, English
Subtitles: None

A darioargento project about which he says: “Throw away those horrible pan & Scan retro media dvd’s , its time for a upgrade. Using a sweet looking Italian TV Print i’ve added the English Audio from the old print , There were loads of scenes which needed the audio to be looped from the Italian Print , but only one had any dialogue and its about 30 seconds long. The English audio suffered from missing words , jump cuts from i guess damage to their print. The sync is OK , Not perfect but its a little better than the old vhs rip , the audio took over 200 edits to fit and this took 5 days work to bring to you , my cinemageddon friends. Again please remember its fan-made and please dont sell this on ioffer etc , share anywhere you want to tho.”

“This Spanish-Italian co-production tells an interesting and weird story about Dr. Bannister, a woman that not only has the best years behind her, but also has a scarred face that makes her look like a freak. But in Madrid, a professor she knows has conducted some experiments on animals with a substance which regenerates cells. The experiments were successful, but the animals became aggressive. Because the professor won’t allow Dr. Bannister to be the first human guinea pig, she kills him and consumes the substance. She becomes a beautiful young woman, but also a vicious killer when it comes to keep her secret a secret. The plot of the film is great fun, but Piero Vivarelli had not enough skills and money to make a cool movie out of it. Also, the film becomes boring after a good start and doesn’t manage to regain a fast pace even though the film’s running time doesn’t exceed 83 minutes. And as the setting changes to Swiss city Geneva for the last third of the film, it sometimes even looks like a vacation movie as we see how beautiful Geneva is (which it is indeed – but it doesn’t help to push the plot forward…). So, with a more talented director, better actors and a bigger budget, “Satanik” could have become an obscure Italian classic. But, as it is, it’s just a lacklustre and boring crime film that isn’t really worth looking for.” [imdb]

La Morte Bussa Due Volte

In Paprika Chips, Somebody got murdered on June 28, 2013 at 4:04 pm

Title: La Morte Bussa Due Volte (The Blonde Connection)
Production: Germany/Italy 1969
Director: Harald Philipp
Cast: Dean Reed, Fabio Testi, Ini Assmann
Run Time: 79min
Circulation: PAL DVDr
Generation/Source: VHS Master
Language: Italian, English, German
Subtitles: English

A pipipip/darioargento project about which he says: “I’ve used a nice italian print with no hardcoded subs , although the pre credit sequence from the old print has been used , because of more nudity and some scenes not being present in the Italian print. From the Credit sequence onwards the italian vhs is used , another point is the italian language track is very quiet , boosting the audio only made things worse ,its audiable (Just turn your TV Volume up). The English Track is very nice , clear with a nice sound throughout. Altogether a whopping 26 sound edits and again the end result is hopefully going to give you the viewer pleasure.

“This is an early gialli (pre-“Bird with Crystal Plumage”)and is thus neither as violent, sexually graphic, or visually stylish as some of the later ones, but it’s worth seeing for fans of the giallo genre. This movie has a lot going for it. The great Fabio Testi plays a deranged artist who can’t seem to resist strangling his female partners during sex. The voluptuous Anita Ekberg (the fountain-bather in Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita”) is an older, married female art dealer who just can’t resist Testi’s possibly homicidal charms and becomes the potential victim of an elaborate murder plot. The villainous Adolf Celli plays her oft-cuckolded husband, a scary gangster called “The Professor”. Even a young Femi Benussi gets into the act in one of her earliest have-naked-sex-and-get-brutally-murdered-minutes-later cameos. Unfortunately, the lead, American actor Dean Reed, is about as charisma-free as they come. Part of it his character, a private detective who callously uses his faithful fiancée as bait to snare the dangerous, sex-crazed artist. I was hoping something would happen–that she would cheat on him with Testi at the very least, but she is unaccountably loyal to this idiot. Even stranger, the detective at one point befriends a vicious dog belonging to another character, and the dog later rescues him at a crucial point (what is this–“Lassie”?). What either the dog or the girl see in this guy is beyond me.” [imdb]

“A young woman who marries the wealthy father of a university friend, but quickly falls in love with a younger man. The jilted husband hatches an unusual plan for revenge by framing the adulterous couple with his own murder and sealing them in a room in his isolated villa with his dead body. Since most of this movie takes place in a single location, the movie quickly becomes paranoid and claustrophobic as the young couple fall apart debating about what has happened and what to do about it.” [imdb]
