“Here’s another terrific, mean-spirited thriller, sometimes vaguely erotic, but mostly just twisted. Nicole DeBonne, who stared in Max Pecas’ “Claude and Greta” (aka “Her and She and Him”) and who looks very much like a young, red-haired Joan Rivers, stars as a probably twenty-year-old girl who lives with her mute sister, her blonde cousin, with whom she cuddles while topless more often than not, and her mother in a relatively large house in the French countryside. Men are in short supply, except for the beefy one who comes to service DeBonne on occasion, and when the cousins see a man they tend to go rather wild.
Most of their time, though, is spent caring for DeBonne’s mute sister who was traumatized by a childhood friend’s death at an early age and has thus been rendered unable to speak, or even feed herself. The cousins slap her around, attach a loud radio to her wheelchair, and force her to observe their marijuana toking. The mother goes away on business for a weekend, and the cousins have a rollicking swingers’ party, which climaxes in something other than an orgy. Fearing exposure from their mute witness to their activities, the cousins try to scare her to death.”

La noche de los sexos abiertos

Production: Spain 1983
Director: Jesús Franco
Cast: Lina Romay, Antonio Mayans, Lorna Green
Run Time: 85min
Circulation: PAL DVDR
Generation/Source: TV Rip
Language: Spanish
Subtitles: English

A Suckmysound project.
“The Franco bounty continues with this FULL DVD RIP of one of Jess Franco’s most elusive Golden Films productions, made in 1981 between “El Hotel de los Ligues” and “Macumba Sexual.” It’s so rare, in fact, that no print was available for review at the time the book “Obsession – The Films of Jess Franco” was published, and it’s not discussed in Carlos Aguilar’s book either.

It’s a sequel of sorts to “La Chica de las Bragas Transparentes/Pick-Up Girls” (1980) which introduced Antonio Mayans as private detective Al Crosby, the role he plays here – an inexplicable knock-off of the Al Pereira character that dates back in Franco’s work to Eddie Constantine’s portrayal in “Attack of the Robots” (1965). There were 17 Golden Films productions made between 1981 and 1985, of which “La Noche de los Sexos Abiertos” was the second. Franco produced these films himself and had final cut on them, which explains why they form such an intense and unapologetically original body of work.

Here’s the storyline translated from the video box:

“Moira – a beautiful and erotic cabaret dancer – is hired to impersonate another woman who turns out to be a secret agent and must receive an important message in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In that message is reported and discovered the hidden whereabouts of a very important character from World War II [a Nazi officer named Von Klaus] who once absconded with a vast fortune in gold. Aided by private detective Al Crosby, with whom her relationship goes beyond the limits of pleasure, Moira manages to locate the mysterious character.” Based on the novel by David Khunne, don’t you know.

Of course, Moira is portrayed by Lina Romay – who it must be said looks spectacular here – and the cast also features Eva Palmer (billed in other Franco movies as Lorna Green), Albino Graziani, Mayans’ wife Juana de la Morena (whose vagina is cauterized by a hot curling iron), Tony Skios and Franco himself in a funny bit part.

The movie opens on an melancholy note as Al is shown driving into town at nightfall, accompanied by soft samba music whose spell is periodically broken by cutaways to Moira, performing her erotic stage performance to a more jacked-up, heavy breathing piece of music. The music is credited to Pablo Villa and this is easily one of Franco’s most musical films from this period, the highlight being a rock number whose only lyric is “The taste taste taste taste taste of your sperm! The taste taste taste taste taste of your sperm!” repeated ad infinitum. Even funnier, in the very next scene when we think we’re finally free of it, it turns up on a bedroom radio as Al rapes Moira! The Gran Canaria and Alicante locations are beautiful, and the film’s climax features shots taken in the same structure where the “Perverse Countess” interiors were shot a decade earlier.

Spain was still two years away from permitting hardcore porn and Franco sometimes cleverly teases the boundaries of what was legally allowed. During one of her stage performances (it’s more of a lumpy garage floor than a stage), Moira masturbates while licking the photos in a sex magazine, literally fellating a photo and performing cunnilingus on another. So the content is as hard as you can get in a soft X.”

Telecine of a rare Italian Super8 release.

“African expedition finds wild white girl living with animals on a backlot jungle set. Although not reflected in the IMDB credits, the titular (and then some) role is played by Femi Benussi, at her most gorgeous. There are bad guys and good guys on the expedition, but the principal point of the film is summed up in the observation that Femi spends about 99% of her screen time wearing nothing but a little junglekini thong bottom. (She looks terrific, traveling the jungle on elephantback.) At one point she finds some of the expedition’s castoff junk, including discarded clothing, and slips into a jacket she’s found in the debris. Her pet chimp eyes her up and down, then shakes his head “no” and she slips right back out of the jacket. (This seems to be conclusive proof that the Darwinian theory is, after all, correct.)” ~imdb

An aleedo0306 project.

“Simonetta Stefanelli stars as Lucrezia Borgia in Luciano Ercoli’s versionof the early life of this fascinating historical persona. If the accuracy of the historical facts may be drawn into question, Ercoli certainly cannot be contested in his attempt to bring all the more sensational and lascivious details to the screen. The film is actually very good looking, and Stefanelli is a gorgeous Lucrezia. Simonetta Stefanelli performers as the pitiless Lucrezia Borgia in Luciano Ercoli’s take on the Borgia household. During the early 16th century, Italy is governed by the mighty Borgia family, directed by Cesar Borgia and his cousin Lucrezia (Martine Carol). In a ruthless power play, Cesare plots to have his sister’s spouse murdered. But lacking her brother’s understanding, Lucretia has taken a durable lover who will challenge the Borgias, but Cesar’s love for his cousin will once again contribute to the decline of Lucrezia’s partner and unite the 2 friends in an incestuous connection.” ~imdb

A Nikko project where he enhanced an Italian TV rip with custom English subtitles by marooned.

“Despite the promise gleaned from the plot line of sex and death in a remote island setting and the contributions behind the camera of co-screenwriter Dario Argento and composer Ennio Morricone (soon to re-unite on the former’s directorial debut – THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE [1970]), this boring would-be psychodrama is sunk by incompetent handling and its own naïve pretensions.

Udo Kier is the wealthy but decadent recluse (who has just murdered his domineering and ageing mistress and whose relationship is shown in intermittent and rather pointless flashbacks) presiding over the island but who’s also something of a sportsman. When he brandishes a machine gun and lets his German sheperd loose after the four girls who turn up unannounced at his abode, one would think we’d be in for a psychedelic variant on that old warhorse – THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME (1932) – but, alas, this angle was stymied before it had even begun! Instead, we’re dealt vapid dinner-table conversations, lectures on sexuality(!), stupid parlor games (balls are dunked in paint and thrown at Kier who has to ditch them, before turning into a free-for-all), even sillier fashion shows (with the girls prancing about in front of the camera, which follows them voyeuristically) and, of course, constant squabbling among the amorous but clueless girls over who gets to sleep with the young master of the house!

The soft, colorful look of the film is typical of its era but Morricone’s score seems uninspired by the material. The most alluring of the girls is played by Ewa Thulin, whom I had only seen in the interesting sexploitationer THE SEDUCERS (1969) early this year while in Hollywood, and in which she had held her own against favorite “Euro-Cult” starlets Rosalba Neri and Edwige Fenech! As for the downbeat twist at the end, it would have been a good deal more effective had any actual sympathy been mined for any of the characters during the course of the film…

All in all, a dated time-capsule which, considering some of the talent involved could have been more intriguingly developed.” ~imdb

“On the legendary island of Ulysses, Ithaca, lives this young girl Electra who is discovering her body’s potential and enjoying the discovery… But people around her, her brother Aris or his friend Stefanos, even her flirt Vassilis, act as if sex is not meant for her so she simply wonders why they all tend to consider sex such a “bad thing”. Only her brother’s girlfriend Katy shows some understanding and provides some explanation to Electra’s earnest questions. When blasé sexpot Maria arrives from Athens for the summer, she persuades Stefanos and Aris to steal the monastery icon for her in return for money as well as a new beginning away from the island’s small-town life. But when Vassilis says that he knows all about her schemes and the icon theft, things get nasty and violent… A bit kinky, too…
Too much work for those two poor constables of Ithaca who are determined to put a stop to all offenses but do not know where to begin exactly. Now, you may wonder… What does the title “The Ceremony” refer to? That’s a good question. But don’t forget Electra’s sensual awakening. She comes back triumphant in the end… This is the soft cut version available in Greece on DVD, so no lesbian scene and only glimpses of the sex scenes on the beach etc.” ~neverever

“With the undertitle “a story of sex and violence”, this Last House on the Left-type exploitationer doesn’t excuse itself. A very cheap production with unknown actors (lots of women in hotpants and disco dues and men with greasy moustaches and tight blue jeans… Zora Zerova was the only actor I recognized) and dull photography in brown, grey and orange color schemes. The story is about a couple of female convicts, a leftwing political terrorist and her jaded band of robbers, whores and dykes, who’ve escape from prison and hide out at a luxurious mansion where they hold a judge and a female basketball team hostage. The schtick being, of course, that its the females that bring the terror and havoc this time around! Highlights include female-on-female rape, the gals forcing the judge to pee his pants, forced dogfood-eating and of course lots of nasty, hateful dialogue! Not the strongest or best in its genre, but I liked it, these nasty Italian disco era exploitation flicks are always enjoyable at worst (and from all the wrong reasons).” ~Lars Jacobsson on imdb
